Cats,Cats, Cats! Why so many cats?

I've kind of been known around the region over the last several years as the “cow lady” having painted over at least 100 whimsical bovine paintings. I’m not done with them but since becoming a potter I've been in a five-year period of learning and experimentation with a new medium- something that I needed very much when I got started. I'm still a painter but I love doing pottery. I have painted some cows on my pottery but for some reason the cats keep showing up more often.

Probably because I live with them. Three to be exact and one who I lost a year ago. More about him later. Please meet the rest of my family: All the cats have jobs in the studio, though none of them is very good at them.    Zimmy  aka Ceramics Cat in my videos and named for Bob Dylan (Robert Zimmerman’s real name). His job is Marketing and PR

Princess because, well… look at her :0) Actually, her full name is very punk rock and not one I will repeat here. Her job in the studio is as Production Assistant

Betty Boop- her name is completely arbitrary, though that is what my mother was called as a waitress. Her job around the studio is quality control

And then there is my Fluffer. Full name- Philly Fluffer Little Dude Cat in the Box Oliver Poopy. So named by my daughter when she was 3.  He is the one I lost last year, tragically, which I won’t go into, because my heart is still broken. He is the only one that I have portrayed realistically on my pottery as my Bad Ass Cat.

In the interest of keeping this post short and sweet, I'll have to save that story for another post as well.

We had 19 wonderful years with him and his job now is Inspiration and Angelic Protection.

I have painted 3 out of 4 of them. Betty has not been immortalized in paint as yet because she and I have had a strained relationship because for a long time she only liked my husband. She has been warming up to me more these days and I realize that what I mistook for uppityness was really shyness. She does grace me with about 2 special days a year which only she knows when they are, where she will come to me in bed and demand that I pet her profusely.

People always ask me if I paint the cows because I grew up on a farm (no, the reason for those is a different blog post), but I generally don’t get asked about the cats because it’s obvious when you love them. We have always been blessed with sweet kitties and they are a big part of our family and my work.

In case your worried, I am not a crazy cat lady all alone in in an apartment with the cats. I have a wonderful husband and amazing daughter who love our cats as much as I do.

Hope you're a kitty lover too. You can see all of my cat pottery and paintings in my shop. Enjoy. Meow.
